Tonight's concert was all about the art of jazz. The first piece was inspired by a painting, as Mr. Marsalis explained, and each song following would also be connected to the concept of "art."
I often make the point that live performance offers so much more of an experience than a recording, and the point is so evident in jazz music. On the heels of last night's improv/vocal-rhythm-driven Jump Rhythm Jazz Project, tonight's concert featured another facet of the jazz genre. Live jazz is an ephemeral experience, a song is never really played the same way twice. Though the large ensemble builds on a common theme, that theme is taken in a variety of directions by the many talented players and soloists. With this concert, the audience got to experience the best of the human art of jazz, in a room with lots of other people, the human qualities of the music really shine - the unexpected, the uncensored, and the fine quality of real individual talent. No Auto-Tune, no CGI, and no advertisements interrupting the best parts.
